The first week has been quite the transition for the new students. With the addition of Nutrition, Cost Control, Management, and Supervision, our program covers a lot more information. The exciting part about all this extra work is that the students can now earn a potential 12 credits to a culinary degree at MATC! This is a great opportunity because we now have two paths our students can take: go right into work after the program with the hands on skills and ServSafe certification, or they can go the education route and continue working on a degree.
This week we have been getting to know each other and figure out what everyone is about while starting into the curriculum (no time to waste!). Here are some introductions to a couple of our students!
“I’m Jerad, 23 years old from Oklahoma. I moved here to be with family and escape the struggles back home, but ended up getting into the same mess once I moved out here. I’m in Just Bakery because I want to fill my time with as much productivity that I can. Also I could use the references for future employment options. When released, I plan on continuing my education with management, marketing, as well as sales. At some point, I’d like to own properties, get into franchise business, and own/manage my own lounge. I want to build a couple of businesses that I’ll be able to pass down to my children at some point. I currently have two baby girls: 2 1/2 and 4, but by the end of my time, I plan on having 5-6 kids. Family and loyalty are big for me. I just want my kids to know that even though life is rough with a bunch of obstacles, anybody can make something out of nothing and make it in this world. It just takes patience and hard work.”
“So my name is Krystal. I prefer to go by KristleLina. I grew up here in Madison. Born and raised with my family. I’m 25 years old. My mother’s name is Alison, father Dan. I have 3 sisters and am a twin. We are fraternal: no resemblance at all :). Her name is Kelsey. I have a 28 year old sister. Her name is Brittany. My mother had another child. Her name is Nyla. She’s 10 years old and she’s my life. Now about my friends. I don’t have many friends, just a couple I’ve known for 10+ years. Other than that, I don’t have many people I consider friends. I have a lot of trust issues.
I’m here [at Just Bakery] because I’m in jail and I heard a lot of people pass and enjoy this program. I want to learn more about myself. I struggle with addiction, trust problems, my learning abilities, etc. My joys in life are my family, music, and going to the gym.
Today I don’t see myself anywhere in the future. I’ve been struggling with this problem for years now, and when that day comes, life will be more awesome. More than it already is.”
“My name is Maurice and I was born and raised in Madison. I was born July 26, 1990 to a single parent, my mother. I’m 27 years old and I have 6 brothers and sisters. I’m the oldest out of all of them. I have a lot of good friends and family members that push me do better in life. I gain a lot and I learn a lot from them.
I motivated myself to come to the Just Bakery program. I love to multi-task and I love to learn new skills. Especially new skills that can really benefit me in life. I’m an outgoing person who loves to meet new people. Some struggles that I fall under at times would be getting side-tracked, especially with boring days at work. However, I have been bettering myself.
My joys in life would be making music, attending school, and just to really have fun. I’m a recording artist who goes by the name Rese 100. I rap about my struggles and what people can relate to in life. In the future, I see myself being very successful. I’d like to own my own recording studio, record label, restaurant, and clothing line.”
Next Friday, our class journalists will tell you about what they’ve learned in class so far and we’ll introduce you to a couple more of our students!
